The Eight Steps

Each morning, move through eight stations of prayer drawn from the Breastplate of St. Patrick.

Step 1

The Trinity

"I arise today / Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity. / Through belief in the threeness, / Through confession of the oneness, / Of the Creator of Creation."

Begin by meditating on the unity of the Trinity. Ask God to draw you into greater unity with Christ today.

Step 2

The Life of Christ

"I arise today / Through the strength of Christ's birth with His baptism, / Through the strength of His crucifixion with His burial, / Through the strength of His resurrection with His ascension."

Praise God for Christ's life, death and resurrection.

Step 3

The Cloud of Witnesses

"I arise today / Through the strength of the love of cherubim, / In the obedience of angels... In the prayers of patriarchs... In the deeds of righteous men."

Remember that you are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Give thanks for the spiritual mentors and examples in your life.

Step 4

The Strength of Nature

"I arise today, through / The strength of heaven, / The light of the sun, / The radiance of the moon... The stability of the earth, / The firmness of rock."

Appreciate the power of God expressed through nature. Ask God to give you eyes to see him as you go throughout your day.

Step 5

Divine Guidance

"I arise today, through / God's strength to pilot me, / God's might to uphold me, / God's wisdom to guide me... God's shield to protect me... afar and near."

Ask for God's direction through the challenges you will face today.

Step 6

The Shielding

"I summon today / All these powers between me and those evils... Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul; / Christ to shield me today."

Ask for God's protection against demonic attack, sin and death.

Step 7

Christ Surrounding

"Christ with me, / Christ before me, / Christ behind me, / Christ in me... Christ in every eye that sees me, / Christ in every ear that hears me."

Commit to center your life on Christ today.

Step 8

Final Invocation

"I arise today / Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity. / Through belief in the threeness, / Through confession of the oneness, / Of the Creator of Creation."

Return to the Trinity, giving praise to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
